Miguel Hernández was born in a very small
town called Cabrera in the Dominican Republic. He had an affinity
for art from a very young age. His parents saw in him a passion for
colors, drawing and playing with clay. It was even before he attended
art school that he started exhibiting his work in solo and group shows.
His career began at the age of 17 at La Universidad Autónoma
de Santo Domingo. There he received a BA, majoring in the publicity
of art. He then studied at Altos de Chavón School of Design,
in La Romana, Republica Dominicana, where he got his second BA, majoring
in Fine Art. In 1998 Hernández received the Charles Bludhorn
Award from Altos de Chavón. This scholarship is awarded to
students, based on merit, to attend the Parsons School of Design in
New York City. He graduated from Parsons in 2000 with a Bachelor of
Fine Arts.
After Parsons, Miguel was a contributing artist with Jeff Koons. He
has done work for Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, MTV Networks,
COACH Leatherwear, American Theater Magazine and various galleries
in Chelsea. He has exhibited works at the Museum of Modern Art in
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, as well as the Centro E. León
Jiménes in Santiago, DR. His work was included in the Forms
of Divinity exhibition at the Williamsburg Art Historical Center in
Brooklyn, New York. In addition, Miguel's pieces have been included
in the Jersey City Artists' Studio Tour every year since its inception
in 2003. Currently Hernández is working for PS1 MoMA as an
